What a fantastic round played last Saturday, with two brilliant see sawing clashes between four of our better sides. As a result of the win by the Eagles over the Mariners, we now have a new leader in the Eagles, who have pipped the Lions at the top of the table. Only 1 point separates these two teams, who just happen to play each other this coming Saturday. The Millers have snatched 3rd place from the Reds, the Reds now 3.5 points in front of the ailing Kats. Wayne Heldt and his rink of young Jason Titheridge, Steve Lambert and John Andrew occupy top spot on the playing ladder. But they are closely followed by Vandersluys, Hall and Florance, with a host of other good Skips not far behind. But on to the games themselves.
Victoria Park Carlisle 75 (6) vs Leeming 71 (2)
(Graeme Wishart 16 - Gary Ford 17) (Gary Beckwith 10 - James Newton 22) (Michael Adams 18 - Phil Dobie 17) (David Florance 31 - Karl Vandersluys 15)
The Reds won it for our dearly beloved Noel, he certainly helped get them over the line, at the end of a titanic clash at Vic Park. The result was in the balance all day, but the Reds prevailed, assisted by the home green advantage. The win was not surprising, as three of the Reds better players returned to the fray to steady the ship. Wishart, Bertaux and Johnson adding some much needed steel. David Florance, very well assisted by McKay, Freund and young Simms, took the big cane to the Vandersluys rink, winning by a handsome 16 shots. This win was the catalyst for the remaining Reds rinks, who dug in to pip the Lions. Michael Adams, with Louie playing brilliantly as his Third, was the other winner for the Reds. Peter Freund and his mates celebrated in style for old mate Noel, well done.
Safety Bay 85 (6) vs Forrestfield 84 (2)
(Alan Holmes 21 - Brad Wicks 16) (Robert stanley 25 - George Tibbles 33) (Bruno Mcvicar 14 - Jarad Weppner 22) (Alan Daddow 25 - Rhys Tillemans 13)
There was only 1 shot in the aggregate at the finish of 84 completed ends, but the Bay boys were at last victorious again. It took the work of two of the veterans to do it, with both Harry Wilson and Alan Daddow saluting the judge. Daddow thrashing Tillemans by 12 shots and Holmes beating Wicks by 5. Safety Bay are still last on the table, but it will make it difficult for Forrestfield to escape the relegation battle.
Kardinya 63 (1) vs Thornlie 93 (7)
(Graeme Fewings 14 - Eddie Gollan 22) (John Rochford 9 - Robert Bowron 32) (Ian Barrie 24 - Norman Holden 16) (Anthony Cocodis 16 - michael yates 23)
The Ravens winning by 30 shots at the Kattery, no mean feat, albeit, it mainly happened on one rink, that of Bowron. Rob Bowron, with the advantage of Glyn Vaughan as his Third, won by 23 shots by over the Rochford foursome. This guy can bowl, and he can let you know also. Eddie Gollan also had a good win over Fewings, a triumphant return visit to the home of the Kats, he is still smiling. Yates, also ex Kardinya toppled the good Cocodis rink, to give the Ravens 7 valuable points. Don’t be surprised if the Ravens don’t steadily climb the ladder from here on.
Hilton Park 58 (0.5) vs South Perth 82 (7.5)
(Travis Simpson 16 - Neale Griffin 16) (Tony Maxwell 8 - Ryan Havercroft 21) (Rodney Butler 17 - John Carter SP 25) (Craig Standley 17 - Steve Kelly 20)
I thought the Hawks, at nearly full strength, would challenge the Millers, but no, they never looked like it apparently. The Hawks only drew on one rink, that of the Simpson four, against the strong Griffin outfit. Dawson, Reagan, the veteran Max Petrich and Skip Ryan Havercroft towelled up Maxwell by 13 shots, to be the best winners for the visitors. The Hawks will be flightless very soon, whilst the Millers keep grinding away.
Fremantle 73 (2) vs Manning 77 (6)
(Peter Holmes 11 - Wayne Heldt 26) (Tony Krajancic 30 - Michael Carey 5) (Peter Wachmer 12 - Murray Piggott 28) (Jeffery Hall 20 - Brett Adams 18)
When one rink wins by 25 shots, and another rink also wins, you would think that this would seal an aggregate win. But no, the Mariners catapulted to a slightly superior Eagles sixteen down at a windy Freo. The Mariners are slowly digging their own grave, unfortunately for them. Tony Krajancik skipped his rink to a massive 25 shot win over the affable Mike Carey, but that wasn’t enough. Wayne Heldt, who is having a very good year, touched up Peter Holmes by 15 shots, a massive loss in the context of the game. Young Titheradge led this rink well, ably assisted by the likeable veteran John Andrew. My information tells me that green was superbly prepared by Jeff Hall, who did win over young Adams. Murray Piggott was superb as the Skip, in beating the well credentialed Peter Wachmer, to seal the win for the cock a hoop visiting Eagles.
A great win to the Eagles, who now fly atop the ladder, the Mariners only just in front of the Ravens now.
