What a fantastic Round of games. Some very tight & hard fought games in blistering heat with the first 3 games only having 13 shots difference across ALL 3 matches....absolute nail biters across the top end of the table which goes to show the competitive nature & hunger of those top teams to play PL next year. The next 2 games were minor blow outs with a few teams struggling for form but the Kats & Millers got critical wins to help with their slow start & move nicely up the ladder. The River Rats taste defeat for the first time but only by the smallest of margins & Ossie Park catapult themselves into the Top 4 with a well awaited home win.
As the Rounds progress these 100% records dwindle, not that they mean much anyway but good fun to track. We now only have 3 players with unbeaten over all 4 Rounds, being R.Cunningham,Lander & Tyson (all Sorrento) & another 3 players with 100% record but only played 3 games, being Bloomfield, Herbert & Newstead. There are a few that have played 1 or 2 games unbeaten but I've excluded them until they play more to build that win ratio. Quite a nice broad mix across the division & again highlights the strength in those quality front end players that can play with a few changes & still find a way to win.
On the flip side we still have over 20 players who haven't won a game yet which shows how difficult it can be to pick up these vital points every weekend. Although it's somewhat surprising to see that list dominated by Basso with nearly half of that total number & some big names in that list too. You would imagine that will change soon as the list is packed with talent & they have had a tough initial run against the higher ranked teams.
OSBORNE PARK 84 (7) v BASSENDEAN 70 (1)
Jason Thorn 14 v Jovan Krstic 24
Michael Dewson 16 v Rodney Revell 15
Tod Weir 27 v Eugene O'Sullivan 18
Fernando Di Giuseppe 27 v Michael Erceg 13
The Saints were travelling good enough away that the home win was due to come sooner than later & it they did enough across the board to grab 7pts with 14 shot win.
Thorn had it tough v Krstic as the Basso blokes raced out to a strong lead & maintained that to the end, winning by 10 shots, giving Basso a great platform to build for a big away win & got Krstic his first win of the season. Rocket had his colours lowered by a Dewson screaming for a win & he just managed that by the minimum margins with the last bowl of the game to take it by 1 shot.
Weir dominated against a very strong O'Sullivan rink, winning by 9 shots & with that the balance tipped over to the Saints. DiGiuseppe drove the game home & put it well outside of reach with a superb 14 shot margin over Erceg. It was always going to be difficult for Erceg coming into a rink that needed a boost & then getting drawn against the Saints leading rink who are putting up big scores every week. When winning Di Giuseppe & Co put up a +11, +12 & now +14 shots, so not an easy rink to contain.
Ossie Park are now sitting nicely in 4th with a small margin showing to 5th & a little more to 7th. Basso need to regroup & pull on that confidence from last year to make a big push over the next 3-4 weeks.
Result: Osborne Park 7 - 1
Prediction: Osborne Park 6 - 2
SORRENTO 75 (6.5) v ROSSMOYNE 71 (1.5)
Christopher Lander 27 v Allan Petchell 14
Rhett Butler 23 v Edward Gollan 12
Shane Loftus 16 v Lee Jervies 16
Greg Taylor 9 v Rawley Lang 29
In the game of the Round, Sorrento put this away like a top team only someone forgot to send the memo to the Taylor rink. When others dropped, Lang was the shining light in making this game a very tight affair late on & really put the Sorrento hearts racing over the final few ends with a massive 20 shot victory to give the River Rats a look at a big upset. Sorrento held tight but not by the margin they would of wanted.
The game got the matchup that everyone wanted to see with the Lander v Petchell pairing. Supposedly it was an outstanding game of very high quality bowls by 2 very impressive rinks. Lander closed out the debate in emphatic style by cruising to a 13 shot victory & sit solely atop of the skippers ladder, replacing Petchell.
Another absolute rippa of a game saw Butler take Gollan by 11 shots in a dominant display that gave Sorrento a huge opportunity to put a big W on the board against the top team. Unsure how many times Petchell & Gollan will lose by a dozen or more for the remainder of the season so credit surely goes to Lander & Butler. Loftus v Jervies was a tight affair with neither rink giving much away as it finished 16-16. Loftus remains unbeaten but that's 2 draws in a row which you mightn't get for a whole season never mind 2 from 4 games but it probably shows how hard they fight even when it's not their day.
Sorrento go marching on, nearly 1 game ahead already with not a great deal of resistance coming over the next few weeks. The River Rats will take those valuable 1.5pts back to Rossmoyne in the knowledge that there is a very strong chance nobody will get within 4 shots of Sorrento at home.
Jeffery Post 29 v Marko Krajancic 12
Jon Borkowski 17 v Josip (Joe) Marevich 23
Brian Ledingham 16 v William TePania 24
Geoffrey Hinge 18 v Mirko Musulin 18
Warwick held plenty of confidence going into this game but they slightly underestimated the Roosters & very nearly paid a hefty price. Winning only 1 rink from 4 wasn't the thought during the week but Cockburn came to play & did that very well.
The positive results kind of started & finished with the inform Post, knocking 17 shots on Krajancic which in hindsight saved Warwick from a bid home loss. Cockburn responded with Marevich back in form to take Borkowski by 7 shots in a strong performance & believe it or not give Joe's rink their first win of the season. TePania got the memo & built on that lead by taking a good Ledingham rink by 8 shots & now there was only 3 shots in the Agg. Hinge v Musulin was another tight game which couldn't be separated in the end as they finished 18-18 for another draw & confirmed the home win for Warwick.
Warwick maybe disappointed to only get 5.5pts at home but probably also lucky to get out of jail in a great contest. The Roosters will take a lot from this game as those 2.5 away points will be valuable especially at Warwick. Cockburn have a nice run from here to Round 9 so watch out for them. Warwick continue to push along nicely, sitting 3rd with a tidy percentage to help.
Craig Stokes 18 v Neville Costello 16
Graeme Fewings 24 v Echo Widermanski 13
Ross Knapp 37 v Hugh Ward 7
Brad Henley 18 v Chris Buchholz 27
And when it clicks it works..........welcome back to the Kats who picked up a solid 7points against a very strong Wanneroo side who no doubt will be pushing for PL. I don't think this changes everything but it certainly helps & lifts them into a comfortable 6th spot on the ladder. The can build from here but only have 2 of the next 5 at home so momentum is important.
Yes the Roos were missing a few key personnel but probably nothing that could justify 34 shot difference but still grabbing 1pt will be valuable later on.
Stokes started well against Costello, who’s rink were running hot over the first few games. Stokes did manage to edge it late by 2 shots to get the Kats off & running. Fewings has a better day out than the first few weeks as he took advantage of some missing personnel to push past Widermanski by 11shots to lock away another valuable point. That's a very impressive 2 weeks for Fewings rink of Hawke, Wood & Bezant with a 16 & 11 shot margin to bounce back in style.
Then the nail in the coffin came hard & fast with Knapp doing a number on a very strong Ward rink by an impressive 30 shots. To put this is context Ward's rink hadn't lost a game over the first 3 Rounds & was winning well by 20,12 & 9 shots so no mean feat for Knapp, who himself had only lost 1 game by the minimum margin in R3.
The only positive for the Roos was the favourable matchup Buchholz got on Henley to put them away by 9 shots & continue that rinks strong start to the season.
The Kats were back to their better form & they’ll be plenty more 7’s from them on their home track so Wanneroo won’t mind too much & will look to Morley this weekend to flush that loss from the system.
Result: Kardinya 7 - 1
Prediction: Kardinya 6 - 2
MORLEY 65 (1) v SOUTH PERTH 100 (7)
Wayne Mitchell 10 v Bill Roelofs 35
Raymond (Tom) Dawson 24 v Gregory Reagan 21
Lindsay Sanders 16 v Denis Bandy 23
Jeremy Thomas 15 v Dean Calvo 21
We believe there was a slight delay in starting due to on ground temperature but the game kicked off just after 2pm & so cooled down with the breeze coming through shortly after.
The Millers didn’t let the heat get to them on the first half as they looked to take control early.
Mitchell v Roelofs seemed competitive until the Roelofs got 10 over 2 ends around half way & continued to edge ahead on the run home to record a huge 25 shot victory & setup South Perth for a vital Agg pickup. Similar was happening with Dawson v Reagan with the South Perth rink up 20-3 on the 12th with their front end playing superbly. Then the unthinkable happened....as the Millers feel into a heat induced slumber (or coma), the Dawson rink clawed their way back in & nabbed it late picking up 21 shots over 8 ends & 11 shots on those on the last 2 ends to leave them shell shocked, great comeback by a persistent Mavericks rink.
Sanders had a great ding dong with Bandy. There was little in it all day with Bandys rink just pulling away late on by 7 shots. Very similar was the case with Thomas v Calvo where Thomas had the chances late on but the Calvo rink just edged them out on the big late bowls by 6 shots but it was anyone’s game up to the last 2 ends.
Somewhat of nothing game for those of at top but an everything game for those at the bottom. South Perth now jump to 8th & Morley are anchored to the bottom with little sign of reprieve as they have Wanneroo this week away then Sorrento at home so unfortunately it’s not going to get any easier to win in the short term.
