Only 3 from 5 this week as some upsets are starting to creep into the results. The curse of Summer Bay strikes again as the 'Home & Away' records continue to define results. Again we had ALL 5 Homes teams win & another week goes by where the Away sides just can't get the chocs, incredible stats.
The upset for the Round could be Sorrento wins against Basso by only 2 shots or more than likely it was Wanneroo's win over Mt Lawley where they knocked a big hole in Mounters Zeppelin as they go scrambling for patchwork to not lose too much hot air. Most other results went as predicted with some of the bottom sides getting valuable wins.
We are starting to see some balance in the top 10 skippers with the top sides having an even spread which shows the dominance of the top 4. Mt Lawley have 3 with Basso, Cockburn & Gosnells all having 2 skippers in the top 10. Other than the bottom of the table clash the rest of the games were horrifically tight with margins of 6, 1, 2 & 8 shots in all the other games.....what a brilliant nail biting Round. Well played.

Bassendean 2 91 (7) v Quinns Rocks 73 (1)
Neil Strachan 33 v Rohan Cantrill 13
Mark Cook 23 v John Berecz 20
Butch Dinnison 22 v Steve O'Neill 15
Eugene O'Sullivan 13 v Hugh Ward 25

The Lions always held the advantage here on the home track & with Quinns away record it was going to be difficult to run over the Lions. The Lions are slightly unlucky that Warnbro grabbed some points too but Basso are now out of automatic demotion by a single point but they'll take that now & after R18. They are 10pts off safety so we won't be having that conversation yet but only a good Agg win off 7th. Quinns are rooted to the bottom now & are desperately in need of some form to get their season moving before it's too late.
Strachan had Cantrill on a string for the afternoon & had a big 20 shot win. Cook did very well to hold Quinns top rink at bay with a big 3 shot win which surely helped the Lions lock the Agg away. Dinnison knocked O'Neill for 7 shots to grab another valuable 1pt. Ward eventually broke his horrible run by a good dozen shots & did it against O'Sullivan's side who were traveling very well this season, so a great time to come good against one of the top sides.
This win was ear marked as Basso's chance of getting 2 in a row. They are 1 for 1 & grabbing that 2nd game next week will make a difference before they encounter some tougher games later on in the season. We don't have Quinns winning another game for a few Rounds but their Home games will give them a few chances.
Result: Bassendean 2 7 - 1
Prediction: Bassendean 2 6 - 2

Wanneroo 83 (1) v Mt Lawley 85 (7)
Neville Costello 17 v Corey Bessant 23
Neville Costello 17 v Corey Bessant 23
David Triffitt 25 v Mark Masel 13
Kingsley Toster 24 v Anthony Einfeld 26

Upset of the Round in this fixture. The Roo's got over the line in a very tight contest but the Roo's got there in the end & grabbed a huge 6pts against the top of the ladder leaders & with that gave the Mounters their 1st defeat of the season. The Roo's were screaming out for a win to stay in touch with the top 4 so they'll be delighted to get that confidence booster. The Mounters still got 2pts which helps & getting 2pts away from home isn't the worst outcome. Looks like they lost Rhodes late with Callison coming in but seemed to be a great contest across the 4 rinks all day.
Costello couldn't hold Bessant back for the entire day as the Mt Lawley rink pushed clear late on to keep their great form going. Buchholz got the better of Jones by 2 shots to break their unbeaten run. Toster couldn't do similar against the only side to remain unbeaten in the division with the Einfeld side edging past late by 2 shots to grab another valuable point. Triffitt might have only won 1 game up to this weekend but boy didn't they pick a time to grab their 2nd win of the campaign with 12shot win over Masel's side & with it the Roo's grabbed a valuable 6pts & the Agg.
The Roo's are 0.5pt off 6th but also only 0.5pt off Finals in 4th so they'll need to keep the momentum. The Mounters have Sorrento at Home, who beat Basso 1 this Round so plenty to focus on there but their next real challenge will be their first game back in R9.
Result: Wanneroo 6 - 2
Prediction: Mt Lawley 6 - 2

Gosnells 76 (7) v Cockburn 75 (1)
Frank Carbone 21 v Marc Abonnel 15
Robert Foy 23 v Michael Simunovic 19
Brett Holland 9 v William Tepania 23
Grant Nicol 23 v Josip (joe) Marevic 18

The Kookaburra's took this one in another nail biter & didn't we have plenty of those this weekend. 1 single shot separated them & maybe a draw might have been the fairest result, as reports say Cockburn played superb. Both these sides are my bellwether sides for different reasons. Well one is a bellwether & the other is a genuine smokey for the season. Eitherway both sides are very good sides, especially at home. I feel for the Roosters as they have lost 3 of their 4 away games but only by minimal margins which is a great sign but they still need to put away a few of those games to make Finals.
Carbone did a fantastic job curtailing Abonnel with a very important 6 shot win. Foy had Simunovic by 4 shots & all was looking rosy for Gosnells. Although nobody told Big Willie & they steam rolled Holland by 14 shots & boy of boy it was game on for the Roosters. Up steps Nicol's side & the ever dependable rink nabbed 5 on Joe's side late on to secure a very hard fought Agg & a massive 7pts to send them into 2nd spot, only 10pts off the runaway leaders but they have to play both these sides away next year so I suspect a chance for them to reduce that runaway margin.
Result: Gosnells 7 - 1
Prediction: Gosnells 6 - 2

Sorrento 82 (6) v Bassendean 1 80 (2)
Alan Anderson 14 v Jovan Krstic 19
Ian Linford 27 v Russell Ellis 16
Lance Martin 25 v Simon Alden 17
Ronald Rogers 16 v Stein Davies 28

The Swans pulled this one out of the hat as Basso struggled to get a hold of Sorrento on their surface. Sorrento needed a good Agg which gives them a little bit of space to 7th spot & Finals is only a few pts away now. Basso will be kicking themselves at the result but also because Mt Lawley dropped pts & a good Agg would have got them within 7pts with R9 to play.
Anderson struggled like many this year to contain Krstic as they lost by 5 shots. Linford powered past Ellis by a big 11 shots which made all the difference. Martin surprised Alden by 8 shots in another big win for the Swans. However, Rogers couldn't contain Davies as they dropped by a dozen & that win gives Davies a nice little purple patch after a tough start.
Swans are showing they are good enough for anyone at home but we'll see their away credentials getting tested next week. Things don't get easier for the Lions as they stay on the road next week & can't afford to go 0-2 coming into the break.
Result: Sorrento 6 - 2
Prediction: Bassendean 1 7 - 1

Warnbro 92 (6) v Rossmoyne 84 (2)
Kieran Cousens 19 v John Carter 22
Barry Kalinowsky 31 v Reza Vind 19
Dennis Pattullo 13 v Craig Edson 26
George (dr) Jackson 29 v Walter Harvey 17

Good high scoring game for both sides as the Wizards got the better rub when the numbers mattered. It was only a matter of time before Warnbro got another home win & it was massively important for them to stop the rot. The River Rats away form gets them again as this was a game they fancied winning & to be playing Finals these are the games they'll need to be picking up.
Cousens got done by 3 hsots Carter, who's side are flying the Rossmoyne flag by a significant margin. Kalinowsky had Rind on the ropes early & pushed right away late on by a dozen shots which was big in the end. Pattulo found the day hard chasing Edson as they dropped by 13 shots & this gave Rossmoyne a great look at the Agg. But Jackson had other ideas as they bounced back in form by cruising past Harvey by another dozen to seal the Agg for the Wizards & push them off the bottom.
Result: Warnbro 6 - 2
Prediction: Warnbro 7 - 1
