Some good close games in round 17 with the highlights being the Cougars beating the Hawks and the Millers also winning and cementing a place in the top three. As a result of Saturday’s wins by the Cougars, Millers and Eagles they are now assured of playing finals, with one of these teams to be automatically promoted next Saturday night.
Down at the bottom of the table we saw the Mariners lose again and they remain 8th, just four points in front of the Kats2 side. A battle in three to join Hollywood and automatic relegation.
Thornlie 70 (1) v Manning 82 (7)
Jim Stean 14 v Alan Heal 19
Robert Carruthers 26 v Graham O'Brien 13
Mark Separovich 17 v Michael Carey 29
Eddie Gollan 13 v John Andrew 21
The Eagles winning out a the home of the Ravens, just like in real life you could safely say.
This win puts them 2nd on the ladder with a very winnable game at home in Round 18 next Saturday against the Kats2 side.
The Mike Carey rink were the big winners, beating the strong Separovich/Vaughan combination by some 13 shots, a great effort away from home.
The rinks skipped by Heldt and Heal winning also, with the Carruthers rink from Thornlie grabbing a point for the Ravens. The Ravens in no mans land, no promotion, no demotion, a reasonable year as per normal.
South Perth 87 (7) v Kardinya 1 73 (1)
Steve Kelly 21 v Ross Knapp 16
John Carter 14 v Graeme Fewings 27
Michael McRae 25 v David Wood 16
Ryan Havercroft 27 v Ian Barrie 14
The Millers flexing their muscles against the Kats1 side last Saturday with a gutsy 14 shot victory and gaining 7 points into the bargain.
I believe the Millers had to withdraw one of their star players just before bounce down with a health scare.
But they soon recovered from that issue and went on to beat the Kats boys, albeit after a tense hour or so at the finish.
The rink skipped by Havercroft, with Maxie Petrich, Fetherstonhaugh and Pride were the match winners, beating the Barrie rink by a sizeable 13 shots. Kelly and McRae picking up the other wins, with Carter getting beaten by Kat Fewings.
This win assures the Millers of a top three finish, with the Kats1 side now assured of fourth spot, but no finals action.
Kardinya 2 75 (6) v Fremantle 71 (2)
Ron Jones 26 v John Smith 18
Robert Hunter 16 v Peter Wachmer 20
Silvio Vassallo 13 v Markus Starcevich 17
Dwain Regan 20 v Mark Gill 16
The Kats2 sixteen showing remarkable courage and resilience to overcome the dispirited Mariners at home last Saturday. They picked up six points along the way, restricting the visitors to just two rink wins, putting them just 4 points behind the Mariners.
Even though the Wachmer rink held and just pipped the Hunter four, the local boys on their slick synthetic held sway, Wachmer having a good year, with his trusty lead in young Trigwell.
Spike Jones proved too skilful for John Smith, with Dwain Regan pipping Mark Gill. The other winner for the Mariners was Starcevich beating the enigmatic Silvio Vassallo.
Game on next week boys.
Leeming 94 (7) v Hollywood Subiaco 65 (1)
Gary Ford 23 v Kim Jefferis 10
Phil Dobie 21 v Robert Campbell 13
James Newton 23 v Daniel Byrne 27
Karl Vandersluys 27 v David Byrne 15
The Lions with a thirty shot win at home, picking up 7 points along the way, but like the Ravens they will not play finals after a reasonable year also.
The visitors put up a good fight, but as usual, just not good enough.
Ford, Dobie and Vandersluys winning by 13, 8 and 12 respectively. Daniel Byrne had a plucky 4 shot win over Jimmy Newton.
Hilton Park 77 (2) v Kalamunda 80 (6)
Rodney Butler 18 v Dwayne Wooltorton 16
Travis Simpson 23 v Arthur Bartlett 15
Daniel Newton 16 v Ian Cornthwaite 28
David Newton 20 v William Brandsma 21
My information from Hilton tells me that the Hawks were desperately unlucky on Saturday to lose to the League Leaders by just 3 shots at the finish of 84 hotly contested ends. The Cougars match winner rink of reliable Mark Clancy, big Pete Townsend, Rod Cooper and Skip Ian Cornthwaite beat the Daniel Newton rink by a very impressive 12 shots. This win, witnessed by all was the difference on the day he tells me.
Butler and Travis Simpson picking up two very valuable points for the Hawks , to give them a real fighting chance to avoid 9th spot. But, I believe the Brandsma rink were the real stars for the Cougars as they literally snatched a win from the jaws of defeat, winning by 1 shot over “ Dad “ Newtons rink.
